New releases for the week of October 10th, 2025.

Theatrical Releases:
Roofman (Wide Release): Channing Tatum stars in this latest film from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines), which is based on the true crime story of a robber who spent months living in a Toys R Us. I saw this film on the last weekend of TIFF, and it was one of the biggest surprises of the festival for me in terms of how just good it was and how much I enjoyed it. Cianfrance does an excellent job melding a crowdpleaser with something more tragic, with Tatum delivering possibly his finest work. Go see this one. (TIFF 2025 Review)
Tron: Ares (Wide Release): This third film in Disney’s Tron franchise arrives a full fifteen years after Tron: Legacy. This time around, the computer world gets brought into our own world through a rogue AI program. Jared Leto stars as sentient digital creation Ares, while Greta Lee and Evan Peters are rival tech company CEOs. It doesn’t reach the same level as Legacy, and the story can be underwhelming. But it generally delivers a satisfying audiovisual experience, with cool visual effects and a booming Nine Inch Nails score. If you’re seeing it, maybe spring for IMAX. (Full Review)
More Releases: A House of Dynamite (Limited), Soul on Fire (Limited), Deathstalker (Limited)
Streaming Releases:
John Candy: I Like Me (Prime Video): This documentary about beloved Canadian icon John Candy is arriving on streaming after premiering as the opening night film at TIFF a month ago. As I wrote at the time, it’s a clear “labour of love” from director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds, both fans of the late comic actor. If you’re a fan of Candy (and how could you not be), their film delivers a very enjoyable and emotional tribute. (TIFF 2025 Review)
More Releases: The Woman in Cabin 10 (Netflix), Boots (Netflix), Maintenance Required (Prime Video)
