Cop Out DVD Review By John C.
** (out of 4)
NYPD officers Jimmy Monroe and Paul Hodges (Bruce Willis & Tracy Morgan) have been kicked off the force after an incident with a drug lord. Having kept their guns and badges, and after Jimmy’s priceless baseball card is stolen, they decide to go out and get some vigilante justice by taking down a Mexican gang. From director Kevin Smith, Cop Out is a dumb buddy cop movie, that never quite finds it’s footing as either action or comedy, and almost feels like a spin-off to an actual product.
Admittedly, there are laughs along the way, particularly from the scene-stealing Seann William Scott, but the majority of the humour is of the lowbrow variety. It’s filled with foul language and crazy shoot outs, and would likely go down better with a six-pack. Cop Out isn’t the worst thing around, but there are many far better recent comedies of both the action and non-action variety’s. Still, there is a bit of dumb entertainment value to be had, but not really anything that we haven’t seen done better in other movies.
The Blu-ray includes over an hour of never before seen material, picture-in-picture commentary with Kevin Smith and Seann William Scot, as well as several featurettes.

**1/3 (out of 4)
Officers Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) are NYPD cops, disgraced by a bad encounter with a gang of drug dealers. Both of them are troubled with their own problems as well – Paul is worried that his wife is cheating on him, and Jimmy wants to pay for his daughter’s wedding rather than let her step-father do it. In order to get the money, Jimmy tries to sell a rare baseball card of his, but it is stolen. This leads them on a crazy chase dealing with drug-dealers, and the card thief, Dave.
The best laughs for me came from Seann William-Scott’s Dave, the immature thief whom they eventually have to employ to help them sort out the gang thing. The whole film is a mixture of shootouts and car chases, and comedic-banter between the two cops + Dave. All in all, put simply, Cop Out is a stupid buddy-cop/action-comedy – that is genuinely funny at times.

**1/2 (out of 4)
Kevin Smith’s newest comedy, Cop Out is a very silly and funny action comedy. Jimmy Monroe, (Bruce Willis), and Paul Hodges, (Tracy Morgan) are two bumbling New York cops, whose personal issues get them into trouble. Jimmy’s daughter is planning an expensive wedding, and needs her father to pay for it. Jimmy intends to pay for the wedding by selling a collectable baseball card. But when the card gets stolen, Jimmy and Paul go out of their ways to try to get it back. Their search for the card leads them to a dangerous Mexican drug gang, as well as a hilarious cat burglar named Dave (Seann William Scott).
Although Cop Out is by no means a brilliant film, it is still fun. The exchange between the two cops is funny, but the best scenes are the ones involving Seann William Scott. The violence is constrained and relatively bloodless, maintaining a PG level throughout. There is no nudity or sexual scenes, so the 14A rating is mainly for the language and sexual dialogue. If you are a fan of hyper action comedies, then rent Cop Out for an afternoon of mindless entertainment.

Cop Out DVD Review By Maureen
** (out of 4)
There have been several movies over the years that focus on buddy cop pairs. Some are good, others not so good. Kevin Smith’s action-comedy, Cop Out, while mildly amusing and entertaining, falls into the not so good category.
The story of two cops, Jimmy (Bruce Willis ) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) who get themselves mixed up with a violent drug ring and a crazy baseball card thief, Dave (Seann William Scott) bounces between trying to be an all out comedy and a shoot ‘em all dead action flick. The comedy tends to be really silly and frequently potty-mouthed. The contrastingly violent scenes with the Mexican drug dealers just seem out of place.
The acting is decent, though I preferred Tracy Morgan in Death at a Funeral. The comedic highlight for me in here is Seann William Scott’s performance as the manic baseball card thief. Anyone who has ever listened to two kids play the annoying repeating words game will either love or hate those scenes. Cop Out is the kind of movie you put on when all you want is mindless action and comedy. If you keep your expectations reasonably low then you won’t be disappointed.

Cop Out DVD Review By Tony
** (out of 4)
Hearing all the bad reviews, I didn’t catch up with Cop Out until the DVD release. Though uneven and by no means among Kevin Smith’s best work, I would rate it as a guilty pleasure, with decent performances from the leads Bruce Willis playing straight man to Tracy Morgan, and some really funny moments, particularly in the scenes with Seann William Scott, and also with Kevin Pollak and Jason Lee. The routine and often silly plot holds together well enough, so I won’t bother outlining it here, since as a Kevin Smith film it is really about the dialogue, which is pretty good without being quite as blue as we might expect.
On the whole I was entertained more than not, so I would rate Cop Out among recent films on about the same level as Bounty Hunter. For Smith fans the Blu-ray disk has about an hour of extra material with commentary that I just might check out on my iPod if it is included on the digital copy.

Consensus: Cop Out is a thoroughly stupid action comedy from director Kevin Smith, but the plot is generally serviceable and it does have a few laughs along the way. ** (Out of 4)
Overall a disappointing romp filled with vulgar humor, bad language, and cheesy plot points, this movie is not worth your time. I was terribly disappointed that Kevin Smith would actually go this low, but hey, not everything is always going to be good. Nice review, check out mine when you can!
