Blu-ray Review: Star Trek: The Original Series (Steelbook Collection)
By John Corrado
This week, Paramount is releasing all three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series on Blu-ray, in a limited edition Steelbook collection. The release coincides with this year’s 55th anniversary of when the show first aired on NBC in 1966.
The hefty box set includes all 79 episodes of the series that originally ran from 1966 to 1969. Each of the three seasons come in their own Steelbook case, with the discs stacked on top of each other on either side.
The trio of Steelbooks are housed in a (slightly flimsy) white cardboard outer box, with dividers inside that keep the cases from rubbing up against each other and also make them a bit easier to take out of the box.
The coinciding yellow, blue and red artwork of the three cases compliments the minimalist cover art on the outer box, and gives the set good spine appeal. While those who already own the entire series on Blu-ray might not feel the need to upgrade for the packaging alone, this Steelbook collection serves as quite an attractive set for fans and physical media collectors alike. It’s got a nice weight to it, and makes a good display item as well.
Bonus Features (Blu-ray):
The 20-disc set includes a number of legacy bonus features on each of the three seasons. The third season set also includes an extra disc that holds both the original and 1988 extended version of the unaired pilot episode The Cage.
